Reaching Amritsar from Delhi
Delhi to Amritsar is 450 km, about 7-8 hours by road on NH-44 via Ambala and Ludhiana. The Vande Bharat train covers it in around six hours, and flights take 80 minutes. Many travellers combine Amritsar with Chandigarh or Shimla on the same Punjab–Himachal loop.
The Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib)
Open 24 hours. The most atmospheric times are 4:00 AM, when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in during the Palki Sahib ceremony, and around 10:00 PM when it is returned. The gold-plated sanctum sits in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar tank, reached by a causeway.
Etiquette: cover your head (scarves are available free at the entrance), remove footwear at the shoe counter, wash your feet in the shallow channel, and do not smoke or carry tobacco. Photography is permitted around the parikrama but not inside the sanctum.
The langar — the world's largest free kitchen
The Guru Ka Langar serves 50,000 to 100,000 free meals every day, rising above 150,000 on weekends and festivals, to anyone regardless of religion or background. Everyone sits on the floor in rows as equals. Volunteering for seva in the kitchen for even thirty minutes is an experience most visitors remember longer than the temple itself.
Jallianwala Bagh
A three-minute walk from the temple. The narrow entrance lane through which General Dyer's troops entered in April 1919, the bullet-marked walls and the martyrs' well are preserved. The memorial closes in the evening; allow an hour and visit before the Wagah drive.
Wagah Border beating retreat ceremony
Thirty km from Amritsar on the Pakistan border. The flag-lowering ceremony begins around 5:15 PM in summer and 4:15 PM in winter, and runs about 45 minutes. Seating is free but fills fast — arrive by 3:00 PM, and expect strict security.
Bags, food and large cameras are usually not allowed; leave everything in the vehicle. Your driver will park at the outer lot, and it is a 1-1.5 km walk to the stadium. The ceremony is closed on some national security dates, so confirm the day before.
