The Yamuna Expressway put Agra within three and a half hours of Delhi, which makes a same-day Taj Mahal trip completely realistic. Done well it is one of the great days of Indian travel. Done badly it is fourteen hours in a car for a forty-minute monument visit. The difference is entirely in the timing.
The route and drive time
Delhi to Agra is 233 km via the six-lane Yamuna Expressway from Greater Noida. Expect 3 to 3.5 hours of driving plus a toll and one refreshment halt. Leave Delhi by 6:00 AM to reach the Taj by 9:30 AM, ahead of the mid-morning coach crowds.
The older NH-19 through Mathura takes longer but lets you add Mathura and Vrindavan on the return leg if you want a devotional stop.
Taj Mahal entry rules you should know

- 4:00 PM — Mehtab Bagh for a river-side view of the Taj, or a marble inlay workshop
- 5:00 PM — depart Agra, reach Delhi by 8:30 PM
Add Fatehpur Sikri or Mathura?
Only if you drop Agra Fort. A single day comfortably holds two major monuments, not four. Families with elders should keep it to the Taj plus one more stop.
Season and comfort
October to March is ideal. From April to June, Agra crosses 45°C and the marble platform is genuinely painful underfoot by noon — an early morning slot becomes essential, and socks help.
Carry water, sunglasses and a hat. There is no shade between the gate and the mausoleum.
