Delhi, Agra and Jaipur form a near-equilateral triangle of roughly 220 km per side — Mughal capital, marble mausoleum and Rajput pink city. It is the most travelled circuit in India for good reason: five days deliver three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, two royal cuisines and 800 years of history on excellent expressways.
The classic 5 day itinerary
- Day 1 — Delhi: Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Qutub Minar, India Gate, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
- Day 2 — Delhi to Agra (Yamuna Expressway, 3.5 hrs): Taj Mahal at sunset, Mehtab Bagh
- Day 3 — Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri stepwell (6 hrs total)
- Day 4 — Jaipur: Amber Fort, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Bapu Bazaar
- Day 5 — Jaipur to Delhi (NH-48, 5.5 hrs), airport drop
Agra: the Taj Mahal, done properly
The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and is closed every Friday for prayers. Sunrise offers the softest light and the thinnest crowds; sunset is warmer in colour but busier.
Only battery vehicles are allowed within 500 m of the gates, so your driver will drop you at Shilpgram. Tripods, food and large bags are not permitted. Also see Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan spent his final years looking at the Taj across the river.
Fatehpur Sikri — the abandoned capital
Forty km from Agra on the Jaipur road, Akbar's red-sandstone city was occupied for only 14 years before water shortages emptied it. Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal and the Jama Masjid complex are remarkably intact. Budget 90 minutes; it slots into the Agra–Jaipur drive with no detour.
Jaipur: the Pink City
Amber Fort is the highlight — reach by 8:00 AM to beat the coach groups, and see the Sheesh Mahal mirror hall. In the city, City Palace, the Jantar Mantar observatory and the honeycomb façade of Hawa Mahal sit within walking distance of each other.
For shopping, Johari Bazaar for gemstones, Bapu Bazaar for textiles and juttis. Nahargarh Fort at sunset gives the best view over the whole city.
Best season and pacing
October to March is the comfortable window; April to June crosses 45°C in Agra and Jaipur, which is punishing for elders. Monsoon is manageable but humid.
Five days is the honest minimum. Four days is possible but means an exhausting Agra–Jaipur day. Six days lets you add Ranthambore or Bharatpur bird sanctuary.
Why do it by private car
Trains connect all three cities but fix your timings and leave you negotiating local transport at each end. A private car on the Yamuna Expressway and NH-48 lets you stop at Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri and Chand Baori, and reach Amber Fort before the crowds.
